Public Home Page

Purpose:

The public home page is the main starting point for all users. Also it explains the site to new users and visitors. It contains a login facility (for access to the secure client and local council areas), editorial pages, access to the free address search and mapping facility, and links to other sites.

Access:

Type the URL www.pointer.gov.uk on a web browser address bar or click the Welcome tab in the upper left corner of any pointer portal screen navigation bar.

The header area described below is the same for all full screens (except pop-up windows) in the system.

“Public Area: Welcome to the Public Area” text

Displays the username and web site area of the current user.

Displayed on all Windows except Pop-ups

On the public page this will show Welcome to the Public Area” (When a user who thinks they’re logged in but are not, this will help them.)

Hidden when a user is logged in.

Allows user access to login box, only available on Welcome page.

Public Navigation Bar

All Navigation bar tab images have a dark grey background with white text by default. On moving the mouse over the images, the colour of the text changes to yellow and reverts to white when the mouse moves off the image.  For the currently selected page, the relevant Navigation tab is highlighted with a white background and dark blue text.  Moving the mouse over changes the background to a light grey.

Terms of Use Agreement Screen

 

Purpose:

This window explains the terms of use and solicits the public user’s agreement before allowing them to continue.

Access:

Click “MAP SEARCH Click here for a Free Trial of Map Search” on the Public Home Page. The user of an IP address should only ONCE see this screen. (That is to say, this screen should only be invoked if the Terms of Use conditions have not been agreed by the user of this IP address before.)

Public Pages – Search & Mapping

 

Purpose:

Public Pages – Search & Mapping is the page where the public user searches for an address or postcode, browses the map, and can send a message to the Pointer Team.

Access:

Click the “MAP SEARCH” image on any of the Public Home Page tabs (if a repeat visit from a particular IP address) or click “I Agree” button on the Terms of Use screen.

This tabbed page operates in different modes.  It loads into 4 different frames.  The uppermost frame contains the header and navigation tabs.  The frame below this is split in two – the left hand side shows the various search modes and the right hand side displays the map.  The bottommost frame displays the footer (as above).

The frame containing the map is itself divided into four frames.  The uppermost frame contains the toolbar, with the currently selected tool surrounded by a red square border.  The frame below this contains the map image itself.  The right hand frame contains the table of contents, allowing selection of different boundaries.  The bottom frame displays information regarding the map.

Displays the number of credits remaining for the current user for the current day. The user is identified by IP address. The search credit is debited as follows:

·          Postcode search = 1 regardless of number returned

·          Search result = 1 when not empty

·          View one address = 1
